Sustaining Kamehameha Schools
Being that we are now Juniors and Seniors, students coming to the end of our journey here at Kamehameha, we are inspired to give back to this wonderful school that has provided us with so much over the past years. Through this website, you will be able to follow us and our campaign to create a business plan for a locally sourced food stand here at konia, upper campus.
Our Proposal
Abstract: Our vision is to create a business plan to present to our school’s board in attempt to create and fund a small farmer’s market stand on campus (beginning at Konia). We believe that this stand can promote a healthier diet for Kamehameha students as hearty alternatives will become easily accessible and students will no longer have to solely depend on akahi and vending machines for food.
The issue: During this period in time, students are undergoing a period of rapid development meaning that they are consuming more food to fuel their brains and body. However, this school does not provide students with a lot of nutritious foods outside of the school’s cafeteria, leaving students undernourished and dependent on sugary treats from vending machines, food trucks, drink stations, and other various distributors to get them through the day. Fast foods have become so easy to obtain that many students don’t even take the time to walk to Akahi anymore and find themselves yearning for an unhealthy acai bowl or boba drink to suffice. Students deserve a wider variety of choices at their fingertips, including healthy, local organic foods that will actually stimulate their brains and provide students with enough food choices no matter what dietary background they have.
Why is this idea valuable? Through the establishment of this business plan, students with restricted diets (i.e. vegans, vegetarians, etc.) will be allowed more options for tasty, nutritious food while also supporting clean eating habits. As many individuals know, Hawaiians are at risk for many illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. So, by creating a healthy haven for students, our idea could contribute to the reduction of illnesses found in the Hawaiian population. We also believe that our farmers market may inspire other students on campus to contribute to the production of local, organic foods that we will be selling and will show them that there are other jobs out there like becoming a farmer, chef, or nutritionist.
What we need: To ensure that our vision to create a market is viable, we will need a variety of different sources. First, we would need to discuss with Kamehameha authorities to approve our proposal and figure out a budget that would be able to support our vision. Secondly, we will need a set location that is suitable for food distribution and a confirmation on hours of operation. Third, we will need staff (student and supervisors or culinary faculty) to work on hand and culinary items to store, heat, blend, or cool items. Lastly, we will need to send out surveys to students to find out what kinds of food they would like to see available at the market, then consult with culinary artists to see if these foods are possible to create while maintaining our sustainability-inspired mission.
